What is Darwin’s Data?
Darwin’s Data, based out of El Segundo, CA, conducts opinion research specifically for legal matters.
As a way to make extra income, paid surveys are getting more popular by the day, but not all survey sites are worth your time…
Darwin’s Data is different. The first thing that makes Darwin’s Data unique is unlike most online surveys that only pay one or two bucks… Darwin’s Data pays $25 for an hour of your time to watch, and comment on a video of mock legal proceedings.
But there’s a catch. Well… two actually.
The first is that you need to be approved, and the second is that survey invitations are few and far between.
Having said that, Darwin’s Data is one of the most reputable (and highest paying) online survey sites out there.
Who Is It For?
Darwin’s Data is for the casual online income earner. Yes, they pay $25 for an hour of your time, but at most… you will only get one or two survey invites per year.
It’s good money when you can get it, but if you’re looking to earn full-time money online, this isn’t it.
A common strategy to earn a moderate income online, is to combine several paid surveys sites with other online gigs such as article writing.
But that has limitations as well. You’re still glued to a your computer screen for 10+ hours a day.
The advantage to making money online is that the web gives you leverage. You can build something once and get paid many times for it. In some cases, for years.
Earning income with paid surveys gives you zero leverage. For all your efforts, you only get paid once.

How Does Darwin’s Data Work?
As mentioned above, you must be approved. Before you can get approved you need to request an invite.
This is another reason Darwin’s Data is unique. Most sites are begging for people and handing out referral links like candy. But not here.
If you are approved, you’ll be invited to complete a 30-minute profile set-up.
This, in my view, is an intrusive screening process which is the first challenge with internet surveys… even Darwin’s Data.
If you don't mind sharing some personal details though, this won't be an issue. And they’ll pay you $10 to do it.
Ten bucks isn’t going to change your life, but how many survey sites pay that much (or anything) just for signing up?
Requirements
Aside from the demographic requirements that match you with specific surveys, there are some basics requirements to join.
Darwin’s Data is only open to US citizens who are at least 18 years old.
Also, each survey is actually a video discussing legal matters, or a mock trial in which you’ll be asked to answer questions. Therefore, you'll need a quiet, distraction-free area where you can watch and listen to the video carefully.
You must also use a laptop or desktop computer. Mobile devices are not accepted.
How Does Darwin’s Data Pay?
Within 3 business days of completing your survey, they will send you a Tango gift card. Again… you won’t find many opinion research companies that pay within 3 business days.
In addition… there is no minimum payout. You submit your survey, and you get paid. That’s it.
Tango gift cards are good for dozens of retailers including Amazon, Target, Starbucks, The Pottery Barn and many more…
Is Darwin’s Data a Scam?
If you’ve read this far, you’ll know that Darwin’s Data is legit…
However, if you’re just skimming quickly and jumped to this headline to find out if Darwin’s Data is a scam, the answer is no.
I did find some complaints which I’ll talk about below, so you may run into someone calling them a scam. But typically, these are from upset members who may have misunderstood the instructions, or had a dispute with Darwin’s Data support staff, and now they’re just expressing their anger.
Another reason people might think it’s a scam is because when it comes to making money online, the unfortunate truth is that there are a ton of scams out there.
It’s also rare to make money online… and for many, something about it doesn't seem right. It’s still one of those mysterious things that people are aware of, but don't really understand. Telling someone you earn money online is almost like telling them you've seen a UFO.
But as far as Darwin’s Data goes… it’s important to know that they are a legit company… not a scam.
Darwin’s Data Reviews and Complaints.
If there's a single common concern with online surveys, it's this; You spend your time submitting a survey… only to be disqualified for reasons that are not properly explained.
And of course, those who don't qualify, don't get paid… whether you've completed the survey or not.
Again, this makes Darwin’s Data unique among other survey sites. This is a rampant issue with most market research companies, but with Darwin’s Data, it’s extremely rare.
It does happen though, and they try to address the issue up-front.

The other common complaint is that there are not enough survey invites (at most you will see one or two a year… and some people report going two years without getting one).
As far as the positive reviews, people consistently say that Darwin’s Data is as solid as they come. They do what they say, when they say it, and most importantly… they pay on time.
What I Like About Darwin’s Data
- $25 per survey.
- They pay they amount they promise… when they promise to pay it.
- No minimum threshold.
- Giving your opinion on mock trials and legal situations is far more interesting than most online surveys.
What I Don’t Like
- Not enough surveys.
- Giving up personal information when setting up your profile. They say it’s protected, but there’s no way to hold them accountable. And, every day now (it seems), we're learning about companies invading (or just losing control of) our privacy. I just saw a headline yesterday about someone’s personal pictures ending up on someone else’s cell phone.
- It’s not a significant contribution to a work-at-home lifestyle.
Final Thoughts
In my opinion, making money with online surveys is an inefficient use of time.
Darwin’s Data, in a way, challenges that opinion. You won't get many surveys, but they're also not wasting your time and flooding your inbox with things that are not relevant to you.
Unfortunately, they are only one, among hundreds of other survey sites that actually are a waste of time.
