Thank you for stopping by to read my GoGoKid Online Teaching Review.

Teaching is not only an important profession, it's a generous one… and the world is a better place because of it. Because of teachers like you.

With that said, I'm sure you're a realist too. As much as you'd like to teach students for free, you've got bills to pay. You may be struggling under a mountain of debt too, or just looking for a way to reduce stress by working from home. Maybe both.

GoGoKid provides an online ESL platform so you, as an English teacher, can do just that. Teach students from home. But is it legit?

It's exciting that you and your students can meet from different parts of the world in a virtual classroom, and this may be the future of teaching. But it's still relatively new.

In this review I'm going to go over who GoGoKid is, what they do, and how they work. I'll also discuss the pros and cons, as well as the requirements, application process and other important information you need to know.

The topics I'm going to cover are:

  • What is GoGoKid?
  • Is GoGoKid Legit?
  • How Does GoGoKid Work?
  • GoGoKid Reviews and Complaints
  • What I Like About GoGoKid
  • What I Don’t Like

What Is GoGoKid?

Established in May 2018, GoGoKid (GGK) is an ESL platform that connects native English speakers/teachers to students in China.

Through virtual class settings, they provide one-on-one English language lessons similar to other teaching companies such as VIP Kid and QKids

GoGoKid is based in China (in the Haidian District, Beijing, Beijing) and they use the Chinese standard curriculum for their lessons, which are based on US Common Core State Standards.

It's an interesting time. While teaching in an online classroom setting is not new, it's still exciting. And it puts ESL companies like GoGoKid at the forefront for empowering students from other countries to impact the entire world.

Is GoGoKid Legit?

Yes, GoGoKid is legit. But they're also relatively new. It's easy to put up a professional-looking website and make false claims. There are countless scams that do it well while causing their victims a lot of pain.

So it's great that you're doing your research.

And you shouldn't just take my word for it. GoGoKid is legit, but it's good to have evidence.

I usually start with things like contact information, address etc. to make sure they have a physical presence. And they do.

Then I check their online presence and community.

With GoGoKid, they're YouTube channel has almost 1300 subscribers (at the time of this review) and over 100 videos on teaching strategies, GoGoKid events, lifestyle, and more…

GoGoKid has a popular Facebook page with  4,000+ followers as well.

You'll also find GGK active on Twitter and LinkedIn with many followers and regular posts.

More importantly though, there are many GGK teachers online who share their experiences, tips, advice and even their class demos.

GoGoKid is definitely legit.

Does that mean they're an excellent company to work for though? Keep reading…

How Does GoGoKid Online Teaching Work?

GoGoKid is an online teaching platform for independent contractors, not employees, which is important to consider before registering and going through the hiring process. You'll have more freedom as an independent contractor, but that freedom comes at a price.

Unlike traditional teaching jobs, you won't have things like benefits or guaranteed hours.

And because it's a contractual job, your contract will be reviewed (and renewed) every 6 months.

GoGoKid Application Step by Step

According to some teachers, the application process can take up to two weeks. However, a recently shortened process should speed things up.

You can expect to follow these five steps:

  1. Sign up – You can sign up with an email and password, or you can use your Google account. During the sign-up process, they will ask you some basic information.
  2. Interview – You will be interviewed by a GoGoKid staff member to assess your teaching experience and skills. This interview typically lasts 30 minutes, at which time you’ll also discuss your pay.
  3. Orientation – You will need to pass a short orientation quiz, a training session, and a demo class to show your teaching skills (where you'll record yourself teaching an imaginary student).
  4. Paperwork and Documentation – You’ll be asked to submit IDs and documents (for qualification) to complete your application.
  5. Signing Your Contract – When your application is accepted, they will ask you to sign a contract. GoGoKid contracts are effective for six months with a renewal option, dependent on your performance of course.

GoGoKid Teacher Requirements

GoGoKid requires that you are legally eligible to work in the US or Canada and hold a Bachelor's Degree.

You must also have a valid ESL certification, preferably from an accredited organization, prior teaching experience (in any setting) and be a native speaker from the US or Canada.

GoGoKid Technical Requirements

In addition to a bachelor's degree and a teaching background, you will need the following equipment:

  • Computer running Windows 7 or higher, or Mac OS 10.8x or higher (4GB Ram and Intel Core i3 or above is also required)
  • Internet (Wired DSL with min 20 Mbps)
  • Camera (HD integrated or external)
  • Headset with microphone

Do You Need a Degree for GoGoKid?

Yes, as mentioned earlier, GoGoKid requires their teachers to have a Bachelor’s Degree.

Parents of students have certain expectations that GGK strives to meet, which is why they've set a relatively high minimum standard for their teachers.

The Interview Process

They will conduct your interview on the GoGoKid's portal. This is important because a common issue among work-at-home companies (all of them, not just GoGoKid) is for scammers to place ads on job posting sites and impersonate legitimate companies…

The reasons scammers do this range from check fraud to identity theft, but the point I want to make here is to be wary of communications that are not conducted through official GoGoKid channels. And make sure your interview is held on their platform.

If you encounter someone who is trying to get you away from their platform and onto a generic one, there is a high probability it's a scammer impersonating GoGoKid.

Now, back to the interview… 🙂

I don't need to tell you how important your interview is. Like applying for any job, your interview is critical, so be prepared for the kinds of questions they may ask you.

Also, you'll want to look professional. Wear teacher-appropriate clothing and if possible, decorate your background as you would a classroom, with letters, pictures etc.

Check your lighting ahead of time.

How Much Do You Make With GoGoKid?

GoGoKid calculates your pay based on per class rate, and incentives, which are determined by a credit score system. Rates are between $14 and $25 USD per hour.

Class Payments

Your base rate (or class rate) ranges between $7 and $10 based on your credentials and interview performance.

At two classes per hour, without incentives, your base rate works out to a minimum of $14 (or max $20).

Credit Score Payments

Your credit score will increase your overall pay significantly, but calculating it isn't so easy. Good thing you've got teaching experience and bachelor's degree 🙂

GoGoKid's credit score system is based on 5 levels.

At levels 3, 4 and 5, you can earn bonuses based on your rating and number of classes you teach in a day. Therefore, it's important to maintain a consistent schedule and strive for good parent feedback and ratings. A consistent 5 star rating preferably.

Of course, as hard as you try, you can only do so much. You can't please all the people all the time. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try.

At level 5, you have the potential of earning $25 per hour, which is a very good pay rate for an online gig. To reach level 5 you will most likely have to work during peak time, which is from 7PM – 9PM (BJT) on weekdays and 9AM – 9PM (BJT) on weekends.

They calculate incentives based on your credit score levels like this…

  • Level 1 and Level 2 – Base pay determined by credentials and interview performance.
  • Level 3 – Base Pay ($7 – $10) + ($1.50 – $2.00) x 100% =  per class rate
  • Level 4 – Base Pay ($7 – $10) + ($1.50 – $2.00) x 110% =  per class rate
  • Level 5 – Base Pay ($7 – $10) + ($1.50 – $2.00) x 125% =  per class rate

That's how you get to $25/hr at level 5.

GoGoKid Base Pay and Credit Score

As for GoGoKid’s payment method, they pay via PayPal or direct deposit on the 15th of the current month (for the last calendar month).

GoGoKid Peak Hours

Being available on GoGoKid peak hours will increase your chances of getting booked because more students will be on the GGK platform. Therefore, while you can choose your own working hours, you might want to schedule during peak hours.

According to GoGoKid (who would of course know best), students from China are most often on the platform from 7PM to 9PM BJT (Beijing time) on weekdays and 9AM to 9PM BJT on weekends.

For reference, if you live in the Eastern Time Zone, Beijing time is ahead of you by 13 hours.

Therefore, you must make yourself available for bookings from 6AM to 8AM (EST) to work during Beijing’s peak hours on weekdays.

To catch all of that weekend action, you’ll need to start by Friday night at 8PM until Saturday morning at 8AM. This could also mean working through Saturday night until Sunday morning, so if you're a “weekend warrior”, these may not be the hours for you.

You'll have to decide if the extra income is worth it.

How Long Are GoGoKid Classes?

GoGoKid classes are scheduled in 25 minute lessons within 30 minute time slots. This allows for late students, and to also give you enough time to log out and into your next class with a quick break.

Hours and Scheduling

The great thing about GoGoKid is you can choose when and how often you work. Not all teaching platforms are this flexible.

GoGoKid provides a 24 hour booking function and time slots that are marked available can be scheduled up to four weeks at a time (and you can schedule as few or as many as you'd like).

Students can book time slots with you up to two weeks in advance.

Where special classes are available, you may find time slots can be booked further in advance.

GoGoKid Reviews and Complaints

At the time of this review, GoGoKid is not registered at the Better Business Bureau (which is my usual go to for accurate user reviews, complaints and resolutions).

However, I found some reviews and complaints at Glassdoor. Here are some pros

  • Work from home benefits (flexibility).
  • Pay is good (especially when compared with other ESL companies).

Some of the cons:

  • There can be glitches in the system because it’s still a relatively new company.
  • Communication delays.

Please note that I didn’t find any scam complaints/accusations about the company. GoGoKid is, as mentioned earlier, 100% legit.

The complaints are also not unusual. Most teaching platforms struggle with the same issues found here, and in many cases, a lot more. Overall, the reviews for GoGoKid are good.

What I Like About GoGoKid Online Teaching

  • GoGoKid is a legit ESL company.
  • Set your own schedule.
  • Base pay with incentives can total $25 per hour.

What I Don't Like

  • There’s no guarantee you’ll always get booked.
  • GoGoKid is relatively new, and may not have as many students as some other English teaching companies.
  • I don't like that a bachelor's degree is a minimum requirement, but I understand it. It's important for the students (and parents of the students) to help qualify teachers… but it also makes it tougher for some people to get started.

The positive here though, is if you do have a degree, it limits the amount of competition you have (and the competition for online jobs is big).

Where Do You Go From Here?

GoGoKid provides some of the highest base pay rates among online ESL teaching platforms. And although teaching is one of the more selfless professions, that doesn't mean you don't want good money for doing it.

You may be overwhelmed and tired of your regular job, or struggling with bills, debt, rent and all of those other awesome responsibilities. The potential of earning $25 an hour from home could be life changing, depending on your situation. And unlike so many other so-called online opportunities, this one is legit.

You can apply here.
