You may be tired of working for someone else or just looking for a little extra spending money for the end of the month, and Verbalizeit is offering you a work-at-home opportunity.
If you're new to making money online though, you might be wondering if it's a scam. You may even be skeptical that making online is possible at all. Maybe everything is a scam, right?
Having run into my fair share of online junk, I know what you mean.
To good news though is… no, not everything online is a scam (although a lot of it is).
In this review I'll discuss Verbalizeit – who they are, how they work and of course… I'll do some research to find out whether they're legit or just another scam.
As someone who's been earning on the internet for some years now, I hope to help you avoid some of the mistakes I made when I was just starting out.

What Is Verbalizeit?
VerbalizeIt is a New York-based translation and transcription company that was co-founded in 2010 by Ryan Frankel and Kunal Sarda.
VerbalizeIt was acquired by translation company Smartling in 2016.
Under Smartling, VerbalizeIt provides services to their clients by using an advanced system that facilitates faster translation/transcription of content. Similar to regular transcribing companies like Scribie, they combine artificial intelligence with human workers to produce accurate results which are better than solely machine-produced translations/transcriptions (apparently better than Google Translate… although I use Google Translate a lot and I'm always amazed how good the technology has become).
Of course, Verbalizeit's clients are the big beneficiaries. This transcription/translation process makes their media content more accessible and usable to a larger audience.
Needless to say, with everyone connected today, businesses are catering to global audiences so things like subtitles, captions, translations etc. have become increasingly important.
And that's good news for us. It has created a unique opportunity for people like you and I to make money from our homes.
If you’re thinking of working for VerbalizeIt, you can do so as an independent translator and/or transcriber/transcriptionist.
Is Verbalizeit a Scam?
It's pretty much mandatory these days to do your research and learn if something is a scam or not.
From phone calls and random job offers, to phishing emails and get-rich-schemes… scams are everywhere. So, it's only fair to ask if Verbalizeit is a scam, especially if you've never heard of them before.
When it comes to spotting scams, a few key giveaways are companies (or so-called companies) with unknown, hidden or fictitious owners and things like have fake business addresses and contact information.
That's not the case with Verbalizeit. As mentioned earlier, Verbalizeit's co-founders are well-known.
They do provide a physical address as well. You can find their headquarters at 79 Madison Avenue, 2nd Floor, New York, New York… however, I'm not certain if this is the office you can find them in everyday because this location is a shared office space provided by WeWork.
Verbalize also has a proper toll-free phone number though, 1-999-382-0705, so you can call and speak to someone directly.
Another good way to get an idea if a company is legit is to check out their social media profiles. Do they have a decent online presence?
VerbalizeIt can be found on Instagram and LinkedIn.
Unfortunately, when I clicked on their Facebook link, it gave me a “Page Not Found” message. I also clicked on their Twitter link which says “Page Doesn’t Exist” message.
Of course, that doesn't mean they're a scam. Most likely they just haven't found the time or the value in promoting their business on those platforms.
Anyway, there's plenty of legit information about Verbalizeit including a mention in Wikipedia under their parent company's page.
Verbalizeit is not a scam.
Having said that, if you're not certain you're ready for transcribing or translating gig, you can also make a little extra “end of the month” money with survey sites like surveyjunkie.com and swagbucks.com.
To be clear, these sites won't make you rich and they won't replace your job income either, but they're an easy way to get started if you've never made money online before.
They can also be a stepping stone to something more serious like an online business.
You may be at home because of difficulties with your health for example, or young ones to look after.
If that’s the case and a full-time income online is what you want, knowing how and where to get started is what you need in order to get what you want.

How Does VerbalizeIt Work?
Verbalizeit jobs include translation, transcription, interpretation, subtitling, and captioning. If you’re going to apply, your entry position will most likely be as a translator or a transcriber/transcriptionist.
VerbalizeIt Application – Step by Step
1. Verbalizeit doesn't provide an in-person method to join so you’ll have to sign up online. You can create an account by providing an email and a password or by using your Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn account.
2. Next, you’ll need to pass their test(s) before being considered for a job. I’ve read in some reviews there are several tests which include a 4-minute transcription (that can take up to 1 hour to finish).
3. After passing their test(s), you’ll also need to get through their training period as well. This is the time to really prove yourself – to show you have the drive, ability, and skills to become a valuable contributor to their company.
4. Once you've conquered the previous steps, you’re ready to tackle your first job.
Verbalizeit Work-at-Home Job Workflow
Here’s how it works:
- Sign in to your account and mark yourself as available. This will tell the system you’re available to take on jobs.
- You will receive notifications of available jobs while your status is in the available mode.
- You are given 2 options – Accept or Reject. You can choose to accept or reject a job posting, but note that this is on a first-come-first-serve basis. If there’s more than one person who claims a particular job, it will be given to the first responder.
- When you get a job, do your work and submit the finished task to Verbalizeit (their review team will then check your work and approve it).
- If your work is accepted, your account will be credited with payment for the work.
- Verbalizeit releases payments every 15th and 30th of the month via PayPal.
- You’ll also earn badges for high-quality work (this will keep you in good standing with the company).
How Much Does Verbalizeit Pay?
As mentioned above, Verbalizeit pays their contractors twice a month (the 15th and the 30th of the month). As of now they’re only paying through PayPal.
While work-at-home jobs are great to have, they are also very competitive. Apparently there are a lot of people who want to work from home… go figure eh? 😉
As a result, online “jobs” typically don't pay great. In Verbalizeit's case, the reported rates are in the $5/hour range.
No, it's not great. But the problem is, it's extremely competitive as a work-at-home contractor (and the rates are constantly being pushed down because some people can afford to work for very little).
Depending on their situation and where they live, they may not need much. But for someone else living in a high income/high expense area, it's not always doable.
Then, with these low rates and and so many online transcription companies competing against one another, the price to the client keeps getting driven down as well.
As a result, most transcription companies are stuck offering the cheapest rates possible to their clients while also trying to pay acceptable rates to their independent contractors.
Something has to give and unfortunately, it's usually the worker who takes the biggest hit.
The real benefits of a work-at-home job like Verbalizeit though, include reduced expenses (if you're no longer commuting to a regular job for example) and the time and freedom to employ an diverse freelance strategy.
What I mean by that is… as an independent contractor, you are “your own business” and companies like Verbalizeit is your client. And unless you have a secure full-time gig with them (or another work-at-home company) or an exclusive deal with someone… it's a good idea to have multiple clients and/or employ different strategies to earn income.
For example, an Uber driver might also do some freelance writing on the side, or while they're waiting between rides.
A transciber can have their own YouTube channel teaching people about transcription and earn additional money that way.
If you're looking for a full-time income, it's important to fill up your free time as a freelancer.
Another example, instead of scrolling through Facebook or Instagram, many freelancers will spend their spare time doing online surveys.
Market research companies like Survey Junkie are a simple way to get paid for your opinion. Swag Bucks is another site that pays for doing things you may be doing online anyway, like searching the web, watching videos and visiting websites.
Of course, you're not going to get rich this way, but combined with other freelance jobs here and there you can put together an overall strategy that replaces your full-time income.
For something more significant, an online business may be what you're looking for.
Making money from home might be something you need because of medical issues, children to look after, or maybe you're just tired of working for a boss.

Verbalizeit Reviews and Complaints
Unfortunately, the Verbalizeit reviews I found on the internet are not that impressive, but just OK. I mean… the reviews themselves are not necessarily bad, but what they're saying about Verbalizeit isn't as good as it could be.
On Glassdoor, VerbalizeIt got an overall rating of 3.9 out of 5 (in 18 reviews), and their pros and cons will give you some idea of how it is to work for them.
But here's the thing…
A disgruntled employee or freelancer is more likely to leave a negative review than a happy one is to leave a positive review. For this reason, it's not uncommon for the overall ratings to get skewed and make the company look worse than it actually is.
I'm not overlooking those who have had issues with Verbalizeit, but I also want to acknowledge that they've been in business for a long time and for that to be possible, they must be doing some things right.
Although there are some less than positive reviews, there are also some Verbalize workers who gave them 5 stars. I would have to assume they're happy about having a flexible schedule, being able to find work at Verbalizeit, and the pay.
Of course, not everyone is happy (rarely if ever do I find a company where everyone is happy so a few bad reviews is normal). Some of the issues with Verbalizeit that were reported are…
- Limitations in the software used.
- Occasional system failures (e.g. the task can't be submitted successfully)
- Pay is low
- Lack of support (some others said they were happy with support)
Overall though, I didn’t find any many detailed reviews that jumped out, so I dug a little deeper. It’s interesting that I found a forum on DontPayFull about VerbalizeIt. DontPayFull is a discount and coupon codes site and has a high trust rating on Trustpilot, but they're not known for their reviews on other companies. .
At any rate though, I found a thread that talked about applying and working for VerbalizeIt, and I think you’ll find this quick conversations interesting. See the screenshots below to get an insider’s idea as to how VerbalizeIt works.
Here are some of the things which I think are worth noting in the above conversations:
- One person said it can take more than an hour to finish their test/s.
- Another said it’s hard to find steady work on their platform (which is why I recommend a diverse strategy for freelancers).
- New members can expect a rate of 80 cents per minute (transcribing work)… which would be an “audio minute” and not the actual minutes worked.
- There seems to be a $15 threshold to get paid.
What I Like About VerbalizeIt
- I like that VerbalizeIt provides freelancers with another option to earn money in their free time.
- VerbalizeIt is legit.
- The positive reviews I found online indicate they’re (more or less) paying fair and providing decent opportunity to work from home.
- They’re releasing payments twice a month.
What I Don't Like
- Their Social Media profiles/presence are not that impressive. At the time of writing this VerbalizeIt review, I only found their LinkedIn and Instagram profiles. Their Facebook and Twitter links led me to “Page Not Found” messages.
- Their ratings/reviews on Glassdoor are not that great.
- The average pay is only around $5 per hour.
- There can be several tests (not just 1) which might take more than 1 hour to complete.
- There seems to be a $15 minimum threshold to release payments.
Where Do You Go From Here?
I know you want to work from home and possible escape the daily grind. I get it, I've been there too. I'm not sure Verbalizeit is a one-stop job for freelancers, but I do think they're worth checking out.
No, they're not perfect and it's hard to ignore some of the negative reviews but I've yet to find the “perfect company”.
At the end of the day, if you were looking for an online job that could replace your full-time income, Verbalizeit is probably not the complete answer. It can help, but on it's own it probably won't pay all of your bills.
There's no guarantee they’ll always have available jobs for you and I’ve read some reviews where workers have experienced dry spells.
Of course, I don't want to discourage you from applying. People always have different experiences with these kinds of things and you don't know until you know. You might even find yourself enjoying the work and earning enough to keep you motivated.
Verbalizeit is a legit company.
And the good news is that you're not limited to just one company. There are many ways you can also earn money online.
You might be a student in school or a single parent at home. You may have health challenges that make regular work difficult, or like the majority of people… maybe you just hate your job.
If that's the case, an online business could be what you're looking for.
With all the scams and schemes out there though, knowing how and where to get started the right way is what you need in order to get what you want.

If you're just looking for a simple way to make some extra spending money though, online survey and get-paid-to sites are worth checking out.
Sites like Survey Junkie will pay you for your opinion and Swag Bucks offers rewards for doing things like watching videos, visiting websites and searching the web.
Of course they won't make you rich, but if you've never made money online before, they can be a good first step to bigger things down the road.
